When you first realize you have to move, you may feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain, about to embark on a huge climb. You may not even know where to start. 1. Find a new home.

2. Start getting rid of things.

5. Call utility companies.
This is something else you can do well in advance of your move—as soon as you have a moving date. Call your current electricity, gas, and Internet providers to cancel your service, effective the day you move out. Choose providers in your new area, and call to set up new accounts effective the day you move in. Since some utility companies can take a week or two to process new account requests, this helps ensure you have service when you move in.
